- Port Jervis City School District continues to develop and implement a balanced assessment system to accurately reflect student progress. The 3-8 New York State English Language Arts (ELA) and Math Assessments are a component of our balanced assessment systems. The New York State Assessments are designed to monitor student progress toward meeting the learning standards. Each question on the assessment is tied to one of the learning standards. Subsequently, teachers receive reports that help determine what concepts should be retaught, what concepts might need less time, and reveal any gaps that may exist in the current curriculum. This feedback is important for teachers, parents and students as we prepare children to be college and career ready.
Federal law and the New York State Education Department requires all students to participate in the 3-8 NYS ELA and Math Assessments as part of the core academic program. There is no provision in statute or regulation allowing parents to opt their children out of state tests. Port Jervis City School District will administer the state assessments beginning next week in compliance with the New York State Education Department testing procedure rules. All students will be given the opportunity to take the state assessments.
Any additional questions about the testing process, please contact your child’s school.
