December 21, 2016 – Port Jervis, NY – The Port Jervis High School Athletic Department unveiled a new gymnasium scorer’s table in a ceremony prior to the boys basketball game vs Fallburg Tuesday, December 20, 2016. The table was named in honor of the late Luann McCarthy. McCarthy was a physical education teacher, longtime coach, and official score keeper at Port Jervis High School. McCarthy passed away last year after a long battle with cancer. The table is a gift from the athletic department and PJHS Class of 2015.
Athletic Director Ron Semerano hosted the pregame ceremony. Boys basktball assistant Coach and Class of 2015 advisor Ryan Schupp was emcee. Schupp spoke about Luann McCarthy, her career and dedication to the school. He told of Lu's battle with cancer, and her neverending desire to be in the gym, working, and keeping score of the games. Schupp was flanked by memebers of the Class of 2015 who returned to honor their former coach, teacher, and mentor.
McCathy's parents were present, her father Michael offering words from the heart. Speaking about his daughter and the gymnasium, "This was her office, her home". With the beachers packed and spectators on their feet, Semerano had Luann's parents remove the banner to unveil the new sign.
A sideline seat was placed near the scorer's table, unoccupied and adorned with a bouquet of flowers, a memorial to McCarthy. "This seat will be left empty in memory of Luann", said Schupp.
