A Message from the Superintendent of Schools, on behalf of the Board of Education and the Port Jervis City School District:

For Immediate Release: March 1, 2018  - Port Jervis, NY -

To Our Port Jervis Community,

Thank you for attending our community presentation to give the public the opportunity to review the procedures and practices that are currently in place in our District-wide and Building Safety Plans and discuss future improvements we are implementing in the very near future. As discussed, there will be building improvements and changes in our communications protocol. We will also have a police officer permanently stationed in our buildings. We will continue to work closely with the Deerpark and Port Jervis Police Departments as well as with parents and board members. If you feel you have any other concerns not addressed during the meeting, please call the district office.
Again, we apologize for the lack of communication to our parents, faculty, staff, and our students. Our students’ safety is our first priority.

A Message from the Superintendent of Schools, on behalf of the Board of Education and the Port Jervis City School District:

For Immediate Release: February 27, 2018  - Port Jervis, NY -

To Our Port Jervis Community,

Foremost, it should be stated that on behalf of the Board of Education, it is clear that our Community’s expectation is that we ensure the safety and security of our most precious assets, the students, our children.

We share this unwavering interest as we consider the safety of our children to be our highest priority.

We met on February 26th to allow the Board of Education to be apprised of each and every detail of the series of unrelated events that have taken place over the past few weeks and to review our procedures and practices in our District-wide and Building Safety Plans.  These unrelated events do bear, in varying levels, confidential information regarding staff and students.  The objective of this meeting was to provide the Board with the information gathered by our legal department, administration and the chiefs of both the Deerpark and Port Jervis Police Departments.  This information will allow us to continue to grow and improve, not only in how we respond to such events, but how we communicate the essential information to the parents, guardians, students, faculty and staff of our District.

It is important to let you know that we are having an informational night for the community.  This Wednesday, February 28, at 6 pm in the HS Cafeteria, we will have a presentation on the safety measures currently in place in our district, as well as an update on many of the plans we are implementing in the very near future.

I want to reiterate, safety is paramount - and I want to stress that there was no credible threat to our schools or our students.  The four unrelated events, while each involving the police as well as school investigations, were not considered credible threats to our schools.  Unfortunately, they occurred in close proximity to each other time wise and followed the horrific tragedy in Parkland Florida, and we as a district did not do an acceptable job in means of communicating to our parents, faculty, staff, and our students.

This will be addressed.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you at the community presentation this Wednesday evening.

The Port Jervis City School District Central Administration will be holding a public presentation in the Port Jervis High School Cafeteria on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 6:00 pm. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss safety and security measures.

March 2nd, 2018 - Port Jervis High School, Port Jervis, NY -  On March 2, the PJHS Student Council will be sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive to encourage our students to begin a, hopefully, life-long tradition of donating the gift of life. This year, for the first time, we are encouraging seniors, their families, and friends in the community to also donate since the Red Cross is in a shortage situation. In addition, the Red Cross also sponsors scholarships based on the number of units that are collected. If the total donations meet the criteria, two of our graduating seniors who either DONATE blood or WORK the drive will be randomly selected to equally share the amount of the scholarship. Anyone interested in donating may do so by calling the high school main office and reserving a time slot. click here for more info>

Port Jervis City School District Letter to Our Learning Communtiy

For Immediate Release: February 21, 2018  - Port Jervis, NY -

Dear Port Jervis Learning Community,

As we grapple with the unimaginable occurring once again in one of our nation’s schools, it provides a clear reminder to all in the field of education that ensuring the safety and security of our school buildings must remain in the forefront of our thoughts and efforts. To this end, we are writing to share important information, as well as to provide insight on the safety and security measures employed to protect our students, your children. We will continue to be vigilant in our attention to detail regarding safety in and out of the confines of our campus - bullying, threats, and concerns with social media. To this end, we work closely with our local police departments, the New York State Police, District Administration, mental health providers, and partners in our community, providing a positive and safe learning environment for all students.

Understandably, following the senseless violence in Florida, all involved will look to their local school district and school for signs that a similar event could occur and to determine the measures put in place to prevent such. The Central Administrative team assures you that we are steadfast in making certain that our students are safe, as previously stated, in and out of the school setting. Our teachers are trained in identifying signs of students in crisis, our school counselors, social workers, and psychologists are proactive in curbing issues before becoming a concern, and the administration intervenes and reacts with appropriate measures to mediate and, if necessary, discipline students that violate our Code of Conduct. Additionally, any concern, inquiry, or report brought to the attention of school personnel or school security is promptly investigated and addressed.

Our staff is committed to serving our students. We have enclosed a reading from the National Association of School Psychologists as a guide for you to help talk with your child/children about school violence.

We thank the parents/guardians who have reached out regarding not only the Florida shooting, but regarding school safety in general. Please do not hesitate to contact Central Administration or the school. Thank you. More more information> Talking To Children About Violence.pdf

Dr Katchen with patientPort Jervis City School District Offers Free Dental Screenings

For Immediate Release: February 15th, 2018  - Port Jervis, NY - The Port Jervis City School District is partnering with Aesthetic Family Dentistry of Port Jervis NY to promote dental health.

A law passed in 2007 and amended in 2013 requires New York State schools to request dental health certificates of students at the time of entering school and in grades K, 2, 4, 7, and 10. In an effort to promote and ensure good dental hygiene, the Port Jervis City School District is partnering with Aesthetic Family Dentistry of Port Jervis NY, to offer free health screenings at school – at no cost to families.

Forms for the free screenings have been mailed home to parents. If parents choose this free dental health examination to be done at school by a dentist from Aesthetic Family Dentistry, they will be provided with the findings from the screening, as well as any recommendation the dentist offers. Families can then follow up with Aesthetic Family Dentistry or any dentist of their choice.

Parents have also received forms in the mail to take to their own dentist if families wish not to take advantage of the free screening in school. A list of dental health practices, dentists, and registered dental hygienist that provide free or reduced cost dental assessments are available at your child’s nurse’s office.
