BIO Bus makes a stop at A.S.K. Elementary School

May 18, 2017, Port Jervis, NY - The Bio Bus, a mobile solar powered education lab, rolled into the parking lot of Anna S. Kuhl Elementary School to give students a chance to learn more about biology. Staffed by two scientists, each with doctorate degrees in biology, the Bio Bus gives students a hands-on science experience.

The mission of the Bio Bus is to expose students to, and excite them about careers in the "STEM" area, which is Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The Bio Bus typically services inner city kids within the five boroughs, but it was brought up to Port Jervis through a generous grant from the PJEF (Port Jervis Educational Fund).

The Bio Bus is a former New York City transit bus that has been up cycled twice- once as a home for a family of four, and then it was donated to Bio Bus when the children were grown. The scientists taught two lessons to the third graders: one about Daphnia which is a freshwater form of plankton, and one called "magnify me" where the students were able to study parts of their own bodies under a specialized microscope. Every third grader was afforded the opportunity to use the powerful equipment and "get up close and personal" with the plankton! A great time was had by all! Get on the bus!!
