Students recgonized for service to community, efforts in the classroom

May 5, 2017, Port Jervis, NY - The Port Jervis City School District presented four students the 2016-17 Theodore Kukyendall Awards at a ceremony in the Port Jervis Middle School Friday. This annual award is given to a student from each of our four schools for their exceptional efforts in their studies and their community service. The 2016-17 Kukyendall Award winners are: Penny Jones, Alexandra Oosterom, Morgan Sicuro, and Rey Torres, III.

Each year the ceremony is hosted at one of our four schools. This year the Port Jervis Middle School had that honor. Middle School Principal Jean Lain welcomed friends and family and spoke of the pride the entire district feels for this year's award winners.
Then the middle school chorus sang a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

Port Jervis City Schools Superintendent Thomas Bongiovi addressed the audience, giving praise to the four award winners.

She spoke to the crowd, offering words of hope and optimism. Maginsky told of her time in the middle school and what memoires she had of the historic building. Her words were friendly and hopeful. She spoke to the award winners, focusing on the word "Why", and its true power. Maginsky closed with, "As much as WHAT you do is important, WHY you do it is essential."

Principals from each school gave speeches and handed out the crystal plaque to each winner.

Certificates from area elected officials were presented, and a light snack was offered at the end of the ceremony.

Congratulations to the 2017 Kuykendall Award Winners. Port Pride!
